Public administration is at a turning point. Artificial intelligence (AI) and automation promise to optimize processes and increase efficiency. Matthias Wodniok, member of the Fabasoft Management Board, spoke in the “UNBÜROKRATISCH” podcast about the potential and challenges of this digital transformation.

Increasing efficiency through automation

According to a McKinsey study from 2018, the automation of routine administrative tasks can save up to 60% of time. This figure is also confirmed by the results of the Fabasoft egovdays 2024 survey, in which participants estimated the automation potential to be as high as 60 to 80%.

Practical examples: Initial pilot projects in Austria for the automation of solar subsidy applications in Austria are already showing how AI and automation can speed up administrative processes.

AI in administration: more than just answering questions

Wodniok also emphasized that AI in administration can do much more than just answer questions. It actively intervenes, i.e. supports, the process - from document processing to decision-making.

Practical examples: Successful pilot projects in Germany and Austria, for example at the ITZBund and the BRZ, demonstrate the practicality of AI-supported assistance systems in file management. In Austria, the automation of solar subsidy applications has already led to time savings of up to 80%.

Trust and transparency: the key to acceptance

Trust and transparency are essential for the acceptance of AI in administration. Fabasoft ensures precisely this through fully documented and traceable processes. In addition, all data remains securely in the respective data center and the training of the AI models takes place directly in the system in order to always maintain control over your own data.

Conclusion: the digital transformation of the public sector is not only feasible thanks to automation and AI, it is already a reality. It helps to make administration more efficient and citizen-friendly, while at the same time increasing the competitiveness of a region and its companies.
